The goal for the Eat Local Challenge website has been simple since day one: to show that eating locally is possible, and that it's possible in one form or another for everyone in the nation -- not just for Bay Area Californians. It's relatively easy for me, in San Francisco, to eat locally. But I consider this site to be a success because we have authors nationwide who are sharing their experiences of eating locally in other places.
Since the Eat Local Challenge 2008 was announced on Monday, we have had a lot of sign-ups. And it has been exciting for me to watch because not all challenge takers are from California. In fact, 17% of the sign-ups have been from California and then the rest are from other states (as well as a small contingent from Canada). We have multiple sign-ups from Oregon, Maine, Pennsylvania and Virginia as well as representation from many other states.
We also have a lot of first timers! A whopping 82% of the sign-ups have been from folks who have never taken the Eat Local Challenge before.
