Eat Local Frederick
By Sarah Irani
Last year I decided to promote the Eat Local Challenge in my hometown, Frederick, Maryland. We already boast several farmers markets, a wonderful food co-op, and a rich agricultural heritage. We had a few poorly attended events last summer. For example, there were only four of us at the potluck, but the kale soup was delicious and the church gave us the leftover homemade Communion bread to break and share.
This year, things are a little more exciting. A friend of mine has produced an award-winning documentary entitled, Organic Frederick. She's taking the film on the road and I'm along for the ride promoting the Eat Local Frederick campaign!
The next stop will be a film showing with the Maryland Small Farm Cooperative, a group of producers with small farm enterprises throughout Maryland at the Frederick County, Maryland Cooperative Extension Service (330 Montevue Lane, Frederick) on Monday evening, July 16th at 7:00pm. I'll be there to talk about the Eat Local Challenge, sign up participants and hand out www.EatLocalFrederick.com buttons- if there are any left.
The website is a wonderful resource to help people in Frederick County find locally raised and grown foods. It isn't hard to eat locally in Frederick with South Mountain Creamery in Middletown, the many farmers markets, the Common Market and the wonderful work of the Office of Economic Development.

I just found this site. I'm trying to eat more local produce. I'm a big fan of this site!

Stepf- glad to hear it! This is a great time of year to discover local produce because there are so many exciting things blooming. In many places it is very easy to find local eggs, milk and meat products as well. We get nearly all of our summer groceries from the farmers market! There are even locally baked breads and soaps for sale there.
