Save the Date: September 2007 Challenge

by the editors

As you are ringing in the new year of 2007, please take a moment to mark your calendars for the September 2007 Eat Local Challenge.  In association with the Locavores, this site will sponsor an international month-long event in which over 1000 participants will challenge themselves to eat within a pre-determined radius of their home.  Because this challenge will be occurring during the harvest season in most locations, there will be a particular emphasis on canning, preserving, and learning to put food up for the winter.

If you are interested in participating in this challenge, please sign up for email updates on the Locavores site or check back on this site for updates in the next few months.  You can also sign up to receive an email whenever a post is written on this site by finding the "get email updates" section on this page in the right-hand column.

I would like to get in touch with anyone in the Minneapolis area who would like to chat about the Eat Local Challenge for a local magazine article. Please contact me at my email address. Thanks!

I'm in! I posted my plan. It's 100% local and it will be harvested, foraged, and hunted by me. It may be a great month for weight loss. :)

Amanda

We've been moving more and more to eat local during the past couple of years.

All of our meat comes from a local farm. Our produce is a combination of home grown (St. Paul, MN city lot), Farmers Market and local co-op.

Last winter I was diagnosed with diabetes, this caused a big shift in my feelings towards food. Food became my number one enemy.

Fortunately, my farm, my family history of gardening and the 1966 Settlement House cookbook have helped me to stay on track, loose 48 lbs and continue to love food.

I'm looking forward to the September 2007 Challenge.

Mecca feel free to e-mail, if you're interested.

I'm joining in! My goal is 95% local for the month of September. (Spices and condiments are my exception, and I doubt they make up a full 5% of our diet.)

I've been eating primarily local foods while on Weight Watchers' CORE program and blogging about my menus and weight loss, along with buying and preparing foods grown in and around the San Francisco Bay Area. I'll be blogging along with the challenge as well.
